I, Benjamin Goes, am a third-year student at Albany Law School, where I am the Lead Articles Editor for the Albany Law Journal of Science and Technology. Before law I studied economics, which is my true passion, and taught it for a while at the university level. My areas of expertise within economics include the history of economic thought and the theory of value. I currently serve as a volunteer coordinator/consultant for the EMC2 program.
Although I serve in a supervisory role for the EMC2 program, I also do a project of my own alongside the students. This year I will attempt to fully develop and elucidate my theory of education and use it to critique the public school system as it presently exists. I hope also to explore possible solutions throughout the course of my writings. This topic was purposefully chosen because in previous years, no matter what my topic was, my thoughts on education regularly appeared on my site as I struggled with the design and implementation of the EMC2 program. After struggling with these ideas on education for several years now, I feel that it is time to address the issue head-on, through this year's project.
EMC2 is an independent inquiry program at Guilderland High School wherein students are given an opportunity to learn about and contribute to a topic of their choice for a full year, with a coordinator/advisor providing close support and individualized feedback. The goal of the program is to develop the students' critical thinking, questioning, and argumentation skills. The program was created to fill a perceived gap in the standard school curriculum, to change the focus for students from learning content to the learning process itself. As a result, the program seeks to help the students grow in their thinking abilities, not necessarily meet a certain expectation for their projects.
